Occidental Caribe vs Riu Palace Punta Cana

Two of the largest family resorts we document, on the same beach

Occidental Caribe: 798 rooms, 18 miles from PUJ. Riu Palace Punta Cana: 676 rooms, 25 km and 30 to 45 minutes from PUJ.

Both are family properties on Arena Gorda. Both publish a water park. This is a genuine head-to-head.

The kids club question, answered differently

Occidental Caribe publishes the ages and the hours: Barcy Club, 4 to 12, 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM.

Riu Palace Punta Cana publishes a kids club and a separate teen club — RIU Land and RIU4U — and no age band for either.

So one tells you exactly who is covered and stops at twelve. The other claims to cater for teenagers and will not say from what age.

For a family with a nine-year-old, Occidental Caribe has answered the question. For a family with a fifteen-year-old, Riu is the only one of the two that claims to have anything — and you will have to confirm it.

Water

Riu publishes six pools — four swimming plus two children’s — and Splash Water World.

Occidental publishes three: two lagoon-style and one kids-only, plus Barcy Water Park.

Six pools for 676 rooms against three for 798 is a real difference in crowding, and it is the strongest argument in Riu’s favour here.

Dining

Occidental counts seven restaurants. Riu publishes no restaurant count at all — five bars, and no total.

Ages for the adult facilities

Occidental publishes a spa minimum of 16 and a gym minimum of 18. Riu publishes neither. If you are travelling with teenagers who will want the gym, that is worth knowing.

Choose Occidental Caribe if

Your children are four to twelve and you want the childcare confirmed in writing, or you want a counted restaurant offer.

Choose Riu Palace Punta Cana if

You want more water per guest, you have teenagers, or you want every room to be a junior suite or above.

Where the evidence cannot separate them

Neither publishes a minimum age or a mandatory fee schedule. Occidental publishes no drive time; Riu publishes no restaurant count.
