RIU Hotels & Resorts has completed a round of renovation work across its Quintana Roo portfolio in 2026, according to the company’s own newsroom, with a new property already under construction to follow. Hotel Riu Palace Peninsula, in the Cancun Hotel Zone, reopened on July 25, 2026, and Hotel Riu Palace Mexico, in Playa del Carmen, reopened in September 2026. A third property, Hotel Riu Palace Quintana Roo in Costa Mujeres, is under construction with no completion date yet announced.

What actually changed at each property

Hotel Riu Palace Peninsula reopened with 618 renovated rooms described by the operator as carrying an updated design built around natural tones, along with a new Elite Club service that includes a private restaurant, a private pool and premium beverage service. The property, in the Hotel Zone, now publishes 9 restaurants, 7 bars and 6 swimming pools.

Hotel Riu Palace Mexico, in the beachfront Playacar area of Playa del Carmen, reopened with 434 renovated rooms, including 56 Elite Club rooms, 30 of which come with private pools. The property publishes 9 specialty restaurants, 6 bars and 5 swimming pools. RIU describes the renovation’s design direction as built around rest, using soft tones and natural materials rather than the brighter palette of the previous fit-out.

Elite Club as a company-wide pattern, not a one-off feature

The Elite Club branding attached to both renovated Quintana Roo properties is the same concept RIU has been rolling into new and renovated hotels across several regions at once; the newly opened Riu Palace Phuket in Thailand, covered below, carries its own Elite Club allocation of 49 units. Seeing the same branded upgrade tier appear at properties on three different continents in the same year is a useful signal in itself: it indicates a company-wide product decision rather than a one-off local upgrade at a single Cancun or Playa del Carmen hotel, and it is worth checking for on any other RIU property under consideration, since it changes what a top room category actually includes.

Scale of RIU’s presence in the region

RIU now operates 15 hotels across Quintana Roo state, out of 23 total properties in Mexico, and the company states the regional operation employs close to 8,000 people. That scale is worth knowing when weighing any single renovation announcement: it is one property update inside one of the largest single-brand footprints on this coast, not an isolated event.

Part of a wider global push

The Quintana Roo work sits alongside a broader 2026 expansion for the chain. RIU opened its first Thailand property, Riu Palace Phuket, on September 4, 2026, on Mai Khao Beach adjacent to Sirinat National Park, with 504 rooms and 49 Elite Club units. According to comments from co-president Luis Riu, the all-inclusive format the resort uses is uncommon in Thailand, making the property a genuine departure for that market rather than a copy of an existing template. RIU also opened Riu Palace Swahili, its first property in Zanzibar, Tanzania, on January 30, 2026, and refurbished Riu Plaza London The Westminster, its second London property with 464 rooms in the historic city center, in 2023.

Five large-scale refurbishments are planned across the group for 2026 in total, spanning Riu Tikida Palmeraie in Marrakech, Riu Palace Nautilus in Torremolinos, the two Quintana Roo properties covered here, and Riu Touareg in Boavista, Cape Verde. A separate renovation at Riu Palace Costa Rica in Guanacaste is scheduled to begin in summer 2026 with a 2027 reopening. Longer term, the company has construction underway on Riu Plaza Broadway in New York, a 673-room, 55-floor tower currently at its ninth floor of construction, and has confirmed plans for a second Dubai property, Riu Palace Dubai Island.

What this means for the region
