Package or book separately: what actually differs
Why this is not a price question first
Almost every article on this subject answers “which is cheaper”. We are not going to, because we do not yet publish price data and we are not going to estimate.
That turns out to be less of a limitation than it sounds, because price is rarely the deciding factor once people understand what else differs. The structural differences are stable, checkable, and matter more when something goes wrong, which is exactly when you find out what you bought.
What a package actually changes
One counterparty instead of three. Booked separately, a canceled flight is between you and the airline, your unused room is between you and the hotel, and the transfer you missed is a third conversation. In a package, there is one seller responsible for delivering the trip.
Different cancellation mechanics. Separate bookings each have their own terms, and they are rarely aligned: a refundable flight paired with a non-refundable room gives you the worst of both if plans change. A package has one set of terms, which may be better or worse but is at least singular and readable in advance.
Consumer protections differ by market and seller. How a package is regulated, and what happens if the seller fails, depends on where you buy and from whom. This is worth checking specifically for your own market rather than assuming, and it is the single most important difference nobody reads about until they need it.
Transfers are often bundled. For this coast, that matters more than usual. Transfer times run up to around ninety minutes in the southern corridor, and a package that includes ground transport removes both a cost and a decision. Two of the resorts we document include airport transport in the room rate itself, which changes the arithmetic again.
What booking separately actually changes
Control over the flight. You choose the routing, the airline, the departure time and the fare class, rather than accepting what the package includes. For a long-haul itinerary with children, the flight often matters more than the resort.
Room-level choice. Booking direct with a resort, or through a hotel platform, usually gives finer control over room category, and it is easier to have a specific request attached to the reservation.
Loyalty and status. Airline and hotel programs generally recognize direct bookings more reliably than packaged ones. If you hold status that unlocks something specific, such as the loyalty-only free transfers one property in our set offers, that can be decisive.
Ability to change one leg. Moving a flight without disturbing the hotel is straightforward when they are separate and often impossible when they are not.
The failure modes, side by side
| If this happens | Package | Separate |
|---|---|---|
| Flight canceled | One seller is responsible for the trip | You hold an unused room and a separate argument |
| You need to change dates | One set of terms, applied to everything | Two or three sets, rarely aligned |
| Resort disappoints on arrival | The seller has a relationship and some leverage | You are negotiating alone |
| Seller ceases trading | Protection depends on market and seller type | Exposure sits with each individual booking |
| You want a specific seat or room | Usually constrained | Fully under your control |
How to decide
Ask which failure you would find least tolerable. If it is being stranded mid-trip with nobody accountable, a package buys a real thing. If it is being stuck on a routing or in a room you did not choose, booking separately does.
Then, and only then, compare totals, making sure both sides include transfers and the state charges covered in our fees guide. A package that includes transfers and a room-only rate that does not are not comparable numbers, and that is the most common way this comparison gets done wrong.
