Meliá has confirmed that ZEL Cozumel will welcome its first guests on November 5. The all-inclusive resort replaces the former Meliá Cozumel and is the first ZEL property in Mexico. The date was reported by Caribbean Journal on October 21, 2026, which describes a beachfront resort with Mediterranean-inspired dining. Here is what has been published so far, and just as usefully, what has not.

What is confirmed

ZEL is a brand Meliá created together with Rafael Nadal. The first ZEL all-inclusive, ZEL Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic, held its grand opening in 2025, so Cozumel is the brand’s second all-inclusive and its first in Mexico. The Cozumel resort is a conversion of an existing hotel rather than a ground-up build, which matters when you read opening announcements: a converted property can open with fresh branding and refreshed spaces while still carrying the footprint of the building it replaced.

The resort offers rooms and suites. The report does not give a room count, so treat any number you see elsewhere as unverified until Meliá publishes one. That gap is worth noting because room count shapes how busy the pool, buffet and beach feel. Our guide to why resorts do not publish room counts explains how to work around it.

Where it sits on Cozumel

The resort fronts Playa Santa Pilar on the island’s northern coastal road. Caribbean Journal describes the beach as the most extensive beach at a hotel on the island, a claim that comes from the report rather than from an independent measurement. The same report places the resort about 3.4 miles from the town centre and ferry terminal, and about 4.2 miles from Cozumel’s airport.

Those distances suggest short transfers by Caribbean resort standards. If you arrive by air, you land on the island itself. If you arrive by ferry from the mainland, the terminal is the same one used for the crossing from Playa del Carmen, which we cover in our Playa del Carmen outings guide. Cozumel is also a busy cruise port, a point we explored in our report on the island’s record cruise year, so town and ferry areas can be crowded on port days.

Dining, pool and activities

The published dining lineup is a buffet restaurant and a steakhouse, both described as Mediterranean-inspired, plus a beach club. That is a short list compared with the multi-restaurant complexes common on the mainland, so it is worth asking how many dinner options are included on a stay of five or more nights and whether a la carte tables need booking in advance. Our guide to a la carte reservations at all-inclusive resorts lists the questions to ask.

The activity list includes an outdoor pool, a spa and wellness centre, yoga, open-water experiences, sports areas, minigolf, a fitness centre and Bali beds. The report also points to Cozumel’s sports calendar, naming IRONMAN Cozumel, GFNY and Oceanman. If you plan to travel around one of those events, expect higher demand for rooms and flights, and book early.

Families and pets

ZEL Cozumel has a kids club and a programme of children’s activities. The report gives no age bands, hours or supervision rules, so confirm them directly. Our checklist on how to check a resort kids club covers what to ask.

A less common detail is the pet programme. According to the report, up to two dogs per room are allowed, subject to conditions, and guests should contact the property to confirm requirements. Anyone considering this should ask about breed or size limits, extra fees, areas where dogs are permitted, and the paperwork needed to bring an animal into Mexico and back home. None of those details appear in the report.

What has not been published

Several things a booking decision depends on are missing from the coverage we found:

  • Room count and room categories
  • Rates, including any opening offers
  • Age policy and whether any part of the resort is adults-only
  • Restaurant hours and reservation rules
  • Whether all facilities will be open on day one

That last point deserves attention. New and converted resorts sometimes open in phases, with a spa, restaurant or pool area following later. We saw this in our report on TUI BLUE Curacao’s phased start. If you book in the first weeks, ask in writing which outlets and amenities are operating on your dates.

How it fits the island

Cozumel suits travellers who want a quieter island base with reef access and a short ferry ride to the mainland. If you plan to leave the resort, our guide to things to do in Cozumel beyond the resort covers the reef, parks and ruins. For flights, our note on the Viva Aerobus Monterrey to Cozumel route shows how the island’s air links are changing.

Before booking, compare ZEL Cozumel against other options using the method in how to compare two all-inclusive resorts side by side, and pull your own total cost using our real total cost method. This article reflects one trade report and will be updated if Meliá publishes fuller details. Confirm all dates and inclusions with the resort before you pay.
