Aeromexico announced in September 2026 that it will launch the first-ever direct flights connecting Mexico to both Jamaica and the Bahamas, removing a routing gap that has long forced travelers between the two regions through connections in the United States or Panama.

The new routes

The Mexico City to Montego Bay route begins March 18, 2027, operating three times a week on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. The Mexico City to Nassau route follows a day later on March 19, also operating three days a week, on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Both routes will fly a Boeing 737 MAX 8 configured to seat 166 passengers.

Why the gap existed

Despite Mexico, Jamaica and the Bahamas all sitting within the same general Caribbean and Gulf region and sharing a large overlapping tourism market, no airline had previously offered nonstop service directly between Mexico and either destination. Travelers moving between Mexico’s Pacific and Caribbean coasts and Jamaica’s or the Bahamas’s resort areas have had to route through a US hub or through Panama, adding a connection and typically several hours to the total travel time. The absence of a direct option also meant higher total fares in many cases, since a routing with an added connection and an extra carrier typically costs more than a true nonstop, even before accounting for the extra travel time involved.

What it means for travelers

A direct Mexico City to Montego Bay or Mexico City to Nassau routing opens a more practical multi-destination trip for travelers wanting to combine a Riviera Maya or Los Cabos stay with a Jamaica or Bahamas resort stop in the same itinerary, without routing back through a US airport in between. It is also likely to appeal to Mexican travelers visiting Jamaica or the Bahamas directly, and to travelers from either Caribbean destination visiting Mexico, a market that previously had no nonstop option at all. The routes begin in March 2027, so they will not affect travel booked before then, but they are worth factoring into planning for any multi-country Caribbean and Mexico trip scheduled for spring 2027 onward. Frequent flyer members of SkyTeam carriers may also find new redemption options opening up on these routes once award availability is loaded into the relevant booking systems, though award seat availability on a newly launched route is typically limited in the first several months of operation.

Connecting through Mexico City

Mexico City International Airport operates as Aeromexico’s primary hub and a SkyTeam alliance gateway, which means both new routes are likely to carry connecting traffic beyond travelers starting or ending their trip in Mexico City itself. A traveler flying from a SkyTeam partner city in South America or Europe, for example, could in principle connect through Mexico City onward to Montego Bay or Nassau on a single ticket, something that was not previously possible without routing through a US hub. Whether that kind of connection makes sense in practice depends heavily on layover length and total itinerary cost compared with existing routings, and travelers considering it should compare the full itinerary against established connections through Miami, Atlanta or Panama City rather than assuming the new nonstop automatically saves time once a connection is added on either end.

Part of a broader expansion in regional connectivity

This announcement follows a string of new air route additions across the region through 2026. Cancun International Airport added 17 new international and domestic routes, covered in Cancun Airport Adds 17 New International Routes for 2026, while WestJet and Air Canada both expanded their own winter schedules to Mexico, the Caribbean and Costa Rica, covered in WestJet Adds Five New Winter Routes and Air Canada Adds New Winter Flights to Mexico and the Caribbean. Taken together, these additions reflect steadily growing airline confidence in demand across Mexico and the wider Caribbean, even as individual routes like Aeromexico’s new Jamaica and Bahamas service fill genuinely new gaps rather than simply adding capacity to existing corridors.

What travelers should do now

Bookings for the new routes were not yet confirmed as open at the time of writing. Travelers planning a 2027 trip that could benefit from the new routing should watch Aeromexico’s own booking channels directly rather than relying on third-party flight search tools, which can take longer to reflect newly announced routes before they go on sale.
