Two different answers to “adults-only”

Neither of these is a straightforward adults-only resort, and neither is a straightforward family resort. They sit on opposite sides of the same blurred line, which is exactly why they are worth comparing.

The Riu property is a family resort with designated adults-only areas, beachfront in Playa del Carmen.

The TRS property is an adults-only hotel inside a four-hotel family complex, roughly ninety minutes from the airport, whose guests are encouraged to use the wider family estate.

If your requirement is a genuinely child-free property, neither of these is it, and that is the most useful thing this page can tell you.

Location is the first real difference

Beachfront in Playa del Carmen means the town is a realistic evening out. Among the resorts we document, the Riu property is the one that most easily lets you leave without arranging transport.

The TRS property publishes a transfer of around ninety minutes from Cancun airport and thirty minutes from Playa del Carmen. It is a destination in itself rather than a base, and the operator charges for airport transfers unless you hold loyalty status. On a short trip, a long transfer that is also a separate cost is a real consideration.

What each rate holds back

The Riu property places premium beverages behind its Elite Club tier and, notably, publishes no exclusions list at all. It details what is included and is silent on what is not. That silence is the single weakest point in its documentation.

The TRS property publishes its exclusions clearly: spa treatments, a reservation fee for the signature dinner show, night-time room service charges, and airport transfers. You know where you stand, and one of those items is the resort’s marquee evening.

Being told what you will pay extra for is worth something. On this axis the TRS property is the more honest document, even though the charges themselves are less convenient.

Dining

The TRS property has a handful of restaurants of its own plus access to more than thirty-five across the complex. That is a large number and it comes with the caveat that most of them are in other hotels, which means walking or a shuttle.

The Riu property names its venues without publishing a count. On this coast, an operator naming venues rather than counting them usually means the count is modest.

The missing number

The TRS property is described as adults-only throughout and publishes no minimum age anywhere. For a property whose entire positioning rests on that number, this is a strange omission, and it is the first question we would put to the operator.

Choose the Riu property if

You want to be able to walk into a town. You are traveling as a family, or as a mixed group where some want adults-only space and others have children. A short transfer matters to you. You are comfortable asking the operator directly about what the rate excludes.

Choose the TRS property if

You want adults-only accommodation and pools with genuine dining variety, and you do not mind sharing a wider estate with families. You are staying long enough for a ninety-minute transfer and a large complex to make sense. You would rather have a published exclusions list than a short transfer.
