Cabo vs Cancun for an all-inclusive

They are not variants of each other

Los Cabos is at the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula, on Mexico’s Pacific side: desert meeting sea, cactus and rock, whales in season, a dramatic and fairly arid landscape.

Cancun and the Riviera Maya are on the Caribbean side, 1,500 miles away: jungle, cenotes, the Mesoamerican reef, Mayan archaeology, and flat white-sand beaches on turquoise water.

Same country, same currency, same language. Almost nothing else in common. Choosing between them on amenity lists is choosing between two holidays on the wrong axis.

The transfer, which is not close

Cancun hotel zone: around 20 minutes from CUN by the operators’ own figures. The Riviera Maya corridor runs out to about 90 minutes at the far end.

Los Cabos: the one property that publishes a figure states 40 km from SJD and about an hour.

So Los Cabos’ shortest published transfer is roughly triple the Cancun hotel zone’s typical one, and comparable to the far end of the Riviera Maya. On a four-night trip that is a real difference.

Depth of choice

We document fourteen resorts across Cancun and the Riviera Maya and two in Los Cabos.

That gap is partly about what we can source and partly about the market: the Riviera Maya’s all-inclusive sector is one of the largest in the world, and Baja’s is much smaller and skews toward non-all-inclusive resorts and boutique properties.

If you want choice within the all-inclusive model, the Caribbean coast has far more of it.

Where Baja is genuinely better

Fewer crowds, by scale. A smaller sector means smaller resort strips.

A more striking landscape. Desert meeting ocean is visually unlike anywhere on the Yucatan.

No sargassum season. The seaweed that periodically affects Caribbean-coast beaches is a Caribbean phenomenon. It is one of the few concrete, structural advantages Baja has, and for travellers who have been caught by it once it can be decisive.

Whale watching, seasonally, off the Pacific coast.

Where the Caribbean coast is genuinely better

Swimmable water as the default. This is the significant one. We hold no verified operator evidence on swimming conditions at the specific Los Cabos beaches serving the resorts we document, and Baja’s Pacific coast has stretches where swimming is not advised. On the Riviera Maya, protected swimmable beach is the normal case.

If swimming off your resort’s own beach is central to the holiday, verify it for the specific property before booking Baja. Do not take a brochure photograph as an answer.

Excursions. Cenotes, Tulum, Chichen Itza, Cozumel, the reef. Baja’s day-trip offer is thinner.

Shorter transfers, more options, more competition.

Sargassum against swimmability

This is the honest trade, and it is unusual in that both sides are real.

The Riviera Maya has a seasonal seaweed risk that varies year to year and is genuinely disruptive when it hits. Los Cabos has none — but has beaches where swimming conditions need checking property by property, and we cannot check them for you from published sources.

One is a seasonal risk on an otherwise swimmable coast. The other is a structural question about a specific beach. Neither is fatal; both should be researched rather than assumed.

Choose Los Cabos if

You want desert-and-ocean scenery, you are staying a week or more, sargassum has ruined a trip for you before, and you will verify the swimming situation for your specific resort.

Choose Cancun or the Riviera Maya if

You want reliably swimmable beach, a lot of choice, short transfers, real excursions, or you are travelling for only a few nights.

Which is better value. We publish no prices and hold no verified rate data for either coast.
