How many pools does a resort actually need

The number on its own is meaningless

“Eleven pools” sounds generous. “One pool” sounds thin.

Neither statement means anything until you know how many rooms are sharing them, which is why the pool count and the room count have to be read together — and why so few operators publish both.

The real ratios, from properties that publish both

The spread runs from roughly 80 rooms per pool to over 500.

What the outliers actually mean

Grand Palladium Select Bavaro at 506 rooms and one pool looks alarming until you notice it sits inside a four-hotel complex with dine-around and shared facilities. The pool count is its own; the water available to you is not.

That is the pattern: a low ratio at a complex property is usually a shared-site arrangement, and a low ratio at a standalone property is a genuine constraint. Check which you are looking at.

Occidental Caribe at 798 rooms and three pools is standalone, and that ratio is the busiest in our coverage. It has a water park and a kids-only pool to absorb some of it, but 266 rooms per pool is a real number.

What a raw count hides

Who each pool is for. Barcelo Maya Caribe publishes eight pools split into semi-Olympic, adult and children’s wading pools. That is far more informative than eight.

Riu Palace Bavaro publishes eleven pools, two of them adults-only — so a couple at a family resort has two pools, not eleven.

Whether rooms have their own water. At Grand Palladium Select Costa Mujeres, 265 of 493 rooms are poolside or pool-access. More than half the guests have water at the door, which changes the pressure on the main pools entirely.

Size. A “semi-Olympic” pool and a plunge pool both count as one.

A working rule

• Under 100 rooms per pool: generous. You will find a lounger.
• 100 to 200: normal for this market.
• Over 250: expect the main pool to be busy by ten in the morning, unless the property is in a complex or has a lot of pool-access rooms.

Then check whether any of them is adults-only, whether any is a children’s pool, and what proportion of rooms have their own.

And the usual caveat

Thirty of our forty-three documented resorts publish no pool count, a room count, or neither. For those, this arithmetic is simply unavailable — which is its own kind of answer.
