Across the resorts we document, published airport transfer distances range from as little as 2.7 kilometres, about ten to fifteen minutes, up to roughly 90 kilometres and about ninety minutes, sometimes from the same airport, under the same hotel brand. That is a three-hour round-trip difference between two resorts a traveller might reasonably shortlist together without realising how far apart they actually sit on the map. It is a larger variable than almost anything else in the decision, and it is also the one most travellers compare last, if they compare it at all before booking.
Do this calculation before anything else
Double the published transfer figure, subtract it from the length of your trip, and ask honestly whether the resort is worth that much of your actual holiday time. The reason this matters more than the raw minutes suggest is that transfer time is not spread evenly across the week. It lands entirely on arrival day and departure day, the two days already shortened by flight schedules, a 3pm check-in and a noon checkout. A ninety-minute transfer on a four-night trip removes roughly a quarter of your usable daylight, taken from precisely the two days you can least afford to lose. On a ten-night trip, the same drive amounts to a single morning and can reasonably be ignored.
Included in the rate, or billed separately
Do not assume either way. Both answers appear across our records, and individual resorts differ even within the same destination. Two Mexican resorts we document include round-trip airport transport as part of a wider bundled rate. One Dominican resort we track publishes that its airport shuttle carries an additional charge on top of the room rate. Most operators publish nothing at all on this point, which in practice tends to mean the transfer is extra and simply has not been disclosed up front. For a family of four, a transfer that is both long and separately charged in both directions is a line item large enough to change which resort was genuinely the cheaper option once the full cost is added up. Price it before booking rather than discovering the charge at the transfer desk on arrival.
The general categories of transfer
We are not going to name specific transfer companies or quote prices here, since we hold no verified source for either and this is exactly the kind of page where sites tend to invent both. What we can describe is the structure of the options themselves. A pre-booked private transfer is predictable and the sensible default with children in tow or a late landing, since you are essentially paying for certainty rather than speed. A shared shuttle is cheaper, but the trade gets worse the further you are travelling; a shared route with several stops added onto an already ninety-minute drive turns into a genuinely long end to a travel day. A resort-arranged transfer, where offered, is usually the simplest option logistically, though you should confirm whether it is included in the rate or billed separately before assuming either. A rental car is mostly unnecessary at a genuinely all-inclusive resort and becomes more of a parking and toll question than a freedom one, with the real exception being a trip deliberately built around leaving the property regularly, which our guide on renting a car at a resort destination covers in more depth.
The gap at the end of the trip
The worst-handled part of most resort holidays is the stretch between a noon checkout and an evening flight home. Very few operators publish what actually happens during that window. One resort in our records publishes that departing guests retain facility access until mid-afternoon regardless of the formal checkout time, and that single detail is worth more on the last day than most amenities the resort advertises. It is a fair, specific question to put to any resort before booking: what exactly can we use between checkout and our flight?
The short version
Check the transfer distance before the photographs. Double the published figure to understand its real cost in trip time. Ask directly whether it is included in the rate. Ask what happens on departure day after checkout. These four questions, taken together, will reorder most shortlists more than any single amenity will. If you are flying into Cancun specifically, our coverage of new international routes added at Cancun International Airport is worth checking alongside the transfer question, since your arrival gate and terminal can shift depending on which airline and route you book. For the wider decision behind all of this, our guide on how to choose an all-inclusive resort places transfer time in context against the other variables worth weighing.
