Why room count is the number worth chasing

It is the single best predictor of how a resort will feel at breakfast, at the pool at eleven, and in the queue for the a la carte restaurant on a Tuesday.

Eleven pools sounds generous until you learn the property has two thousand rooms. Three restaurants sounds thin until you learn it has a hundred and fifty. Every other amenity figure an operator publishes is only interpretable against this one, and it is the figure most consistently withheld.

Four of our thirty-four documented resorts publish it. This list is those four.

Riu Palace Punta Cana — 676 rooms

Why it is here: An exact count, published plainly, on a large Arena Gorda family resort.

What it makes interpretable: Six pools — four swimming plus two children’s — across 676 rooms. A water park. A children’s programme and a separate teen club.

The catch: Neither club’s age band is published, so you know the scale of the resort but not whether its childcare covers your children.

Riu Atoll — 264 rooms

Why it is here: An exact count on a Maldivian island resort.

What it makes interpretable: Three restaurants and two pools, for 264 rooms, on an island you cannot leave. That ratio is the most useful thing this list surfaces, and you cannot see it without the room count.

The catch: The published one-way restaurant access to the neighbouring island may or may not ease it. The operator does not say.

Riu Palace Maldivas — 176 rooms

Why it is here: An exact count, alongside the most specific inclusions list we hold.

What it makes interpretable: A small, suite-graded island property. 176 rooms is the smallest documented resort in our coverage, which is exactly what the overwater-suite product implies and rarely states.

The catch: Couples marketing alongside a published children’s programme, so the environment is genuinely ambiguous.

Barcelo Aruba — 373 rooms

Why it is here: An exact count, published alongside the only kids club in our coverage that states both an age band and opening hours.

What it makes interpretable: A single lake-shaped pool for 373 rooms. That is a real constraint, and it is only visible because both numbers exist.

The catch: The operator’s own page gives two different restaurant counts. Check-in is 4pm, an hour later than the regional norm.

What this list is really measuring

Not quality. Disclosure.

A resort that publishes its room count has told you something it did not have to, and every other figure on its page becomes checkable as a result. Thirty of the thirty-four properties we document have chosen not to — and in three cases a number appears on the page in that position which is plainly not a room count at all, and which we have declined to repeat.
