Riu Negril vs Riu Ocho Rios

Same airport, opposite ends of the island

Everything in Jamaica’s resort sector runs through Sangster International at Montego Bay. From there:

• Negril — approximately 80 km west. Drive time not published.
• Ocho Rios — 90 km east, about ninety minutes.

Both are long transfers by the standards of this island, where the Montego Bay corridor resorts sit 2.7 km from the runway. Choosing either means accepting roughly three hours of round-trip driving.

The difference in what you are told

Ocho Rios publishes both the distance and the time. Negril publishes only the distance.

That is not a trivial gap. Eighty kilometres on Jamaican coastal roads is not a number you can convert to minutes with confidence, and we have not tried. If your arrival is late or your departure is early, the property that tells you the drive time is the one you can actually plan around.

What each is for

Negril is Seven Mile Beach and Norman Manley Boulevard — a long flat strip of sand on the west coast, with sunset as its signature.

Ocho Rios is the north coast, greener and closer to the waterfall-and-river excursions that much of Jamaica’s day-trip economy is built around.

We hold no verified operator evidence on which beach is better, and we are not going to offer an opinion dressed as a finding.

Riu Negril publishes a genuinely graded ladder: Double Standard, garden view, frontal sea view, a Family Room with two bedrooms and a sea view, and a Suite Swim-Up.

That two-bedroom family room and the swim-up suite are both categories readers search for and rarely find published by name.

Dining

Negril names seven venues, including a taco counter and Pepe’s Food. Neither property publishes a restaurant count.

Choose Riu Negril if

You want Seven Mile Beach, you are staying long enough that the drive amortises, and you want a two-bedroom family room or a swim-up suite.

Choose Riu Ocho Rios if

You want the north coast and its excursions, or you simply want to know how long the transfer takes before you commit.

Where the evidence cannot separate them

Neither publishes a room count, a pool count or a bar count. Neither publishes kids club age bands, and neither publishes a mandatory fee schedule. Negril does not publish a drive time at all.
