Riu Montego Bay vs Riu Ocho Rios

Two different trips, not two versions of one

Riu Montego Bay is adults-only, 2.7 km from Sangster International, ten to fifteen minutes. Riu Ocho Rios is a family resort ninety kilometres east, about ninety minutes.

Same brand, same 24-hour all-inclusive, same check-in and check-out. Everything else about these two resorts points at different people.

If you are travelling with children, the comparison is already over

Riu Montego Bay is adults-only. Riu Ocho Rios is the family property.

In our current Jamaica coverage, that means a family trip requires the ninety-minute drive — not because the north coast is better for families, but because the airport corridor we document has no family option. That is a real constraint and worth naming plainly.

If you are not, the transfer decides it

Three hours of round-trip driving is the entire difference, and how much it costs you depends on trip length.

On a four-night trip it is roughly a quarter of your usable daylight, taken off arrival and departure day. On a ten-night trip it is a single morning. There is no universal answer, only arithmetic — and the arithmetic is the thing most people skip.

What each resort actually offers

Riu Montego Bay: five pools, one with a swim-up bar, adults-only, and a named Jamaican barbecue on the beach among the themed restaurants.

Riu Ocho Rios: six pools including two with swim-up bars and dedicated children’s pools, RIU Land, and an indoor playground.

The indoor playground is the underrated item. Caribbean rain is heavy and brief, and few operators publish any indoor provision at all. With small children it is the difference between a lost afternoon and an inconvenient one.

Choose Riu Montego Bay if

You are travelling without children and the short transfer matters — a weekend, a first or last night before an onward flight, or simply an unwillingness to spend three hours in a bus. Confirm the minimum age before booking; it is not published.

Choose Riu Ocho Rios if

You are travelling with children, or you are staying long enough that ninety minutes stops mattering and you want the north-coast setting rather than the airport corridor.

What neither publishes

Room counts, restaurant counts, exclusions lists and mandatory fees are absent on both. Riu Ocho Rios names its kids club but not its age band — even though the same brand publishes four to twelve for the same club in Punta Cana. We do not carry figures between properties, so ask.
