The one number that shapes a Jamaican trip

Almost every resort in Jamaica is sold through Sangster International at Montego Bay. What differs is how far you then drive.

The Montego Bay corridor resorts we document publish 2.7 km from the airport, about ten to fifteen minutes — the shortest transfer we have recorded anywhere. Ocho Rios, on the north coast, publishes 90 km and about ninety minutes.

That is a three-hour round-trip difference on the same island, from the same runway. It is the first decision, and it should be made before any resort is shortlisted.

When ninety minutes is the right answer

On a longer stay, an hour and a half each way is a morning out of ten days and the north coast is a genuinely different setting. Mammee Bay is not the airport corridor, and some people are specifically not looking for a resort you can see the runway from.

On a four-night trip the same drive is roughly a quarter of your usable daylight, taken from the two days you can least afford to lose. There is a resort fifteen minutes from the same terminal, and at that trip length it wins on arithmetic alone.

What Montego Bay’s proximity costs

Being three kilometres from an international airport is not seclusion. The Rose Hall and Mahoe Bay corridor is convenient precisely because it is developed, and anyone whose picture of Jamaica is an empty cove should read the transfer figure as a warning rather than a selling point.

The adults-only pattern here

Both Montego Bay resorts we document are adults-only, and neither publishes a minimum age. The Ocho Rios property is a family resort under the same brand.

So the corridor is currently an adults-only corridor in our coverage, and the family option requires the ninety-minute drive. That is a real constraint on a family trip to Jamaica, and worth knowing before you start comparing photographs.

Where local food actually appears

One detail worth calling out because it is so rare: one Montego Bay resort publishes an authentic Jamaican barbecue on the beach among its themed restaurants. Across this entire market, resort dining lists are overwhelmingly Italian, Asian and steakhouse. A property that names local cooking is telling you something about the week, and it is a reasonable thing to weigh.
