Sun Country Airlines has said it will restart three routes in 2027, and one of them matters to resort travellers: Minneapolis/St. Paul to Montego Bay, Jamaica. The other two are Minneapolis/St. Paul to Melbourne, Florida and a seasonal Duluth to Fort Myers link. The details here follow a June 12, 2026 report by AirlineGeeks. The airline did not provide exact start dates or frequencies, and neither did the report.

What was said

According to AirlineGeeks, Sun Country will relaunch all three routes in 2027. The same report says the airline extended its selling schedule through April 13, 2027, and that its winter network covers 11 destinations in Florida, six in Mexico and 12 across the Caribbean and Central America through April 2027. The report does not name an aircraft type for the resumed routes. The only aircraft reference is a photo caption showing a Boeing 737-800, which is not evidence of what will fly the route.

Put simply, the route is coming back, but a traveller cannot yet plan around it. Until the airline loads specific dates and fares, the Montego Bay flight is an intention rather than a product you can book.

Where the Allegiant merger fits

Sun Country is part of a larger corporate change. Allegiant and Sun Country announced their merger in January 2026, and an Associated Press report carried by local news outlets on May 14, 2026 said the deal had been completed. That report described a combined network of about 195 aircraft serving nearly 175 cities and more than 650 routes. It also said both airlines would keep operating separately for now, with customers able to book, check in and manage trips as before. The long-term plan reported is to operate under the Allegiant name from Las Vegas, with Minneapolis/St. Paul remaining an important hub.

For a traveller, the practical meaning is limited today: you still book Sun Country through Sun Country. Over time, integration can change websites, loyalty programmes, baggage rules and schedules, so check the terms in force on the day you buy, not the terms you remember from a previous trip.

Why Montego Bay matters for resort travellers

Montego Bay is the main gateway to Jamaica’s north-west coast, serving resort areas along the shore east and west of the city and the beach strip at Negril to the west. Jamaica has been through a difficult year, with storm damage affecting a number of resorts, and several operators have been announcing reopening schedules. A returning nonstop from the Upper Midwest is one more sign that airline capacity is being rebuilt, though it says nothing by itself about which resorts are open on a given date. See our pages on Montego Bay, Negril and Ocho Rios for how the main areas compare.

What is not known

  • The first flight date for Minneapolis/St. Paul to Montego Bay.
  • How many days a week the route will operate.
  • Whether it will run year-round or only in the winter season.
  • Fares, baggage fees and any seat fees.

We have not guessed at any of these. If you read a different date or frequency elsewhere, treat it as unconfirmed until it appears on the airline’s own booking engine.

How to plan around a route that has no date

If a nonstop from Minneapolis would suit your trip, do not build the whole holiday around it yet. A sensible approach is to keep your resort booking flexible, choose a rate with a clear change or cancellation window, and book flights only once the schedule is loaded. Read the resort’s own terms as well, since a resort refund policy is separate from an airline refund policy. Our guide on how far from the airport your resort should be helps you weigh transfer time, which matters on the Jamaican north coast where road distances vary a lot between resort areas.

Keep a backup plan as well. Seasonal routes are the first to change when demand shifts or aircraft are reassigned. If your flight is cancelled, the airline’s rebooking options may not match your resort dates, so the faster you contact both the airline and the resort, the more choices you will have. Our guide to check-out times and departure day covers what to arrange if your return flight changes.

Other routes in the same announcement

The Melbourne, Florida and Duluth to Fort Myers routes are domestic leisure links rather than resort-island flights, but they show a pattern: the airline is restoring routes it had suspended, not announcing a brand new network. That is useful context, because a restored route usually has a track record on which to judge demand, while a first-time route does not.

This article reports public information from a single source dated June 2026, with additional context from news coverage of the merger. We have no fare data and no relationship with the airline. We will update it when a start date is published.
