The release also introduces Toronto and Montreal to Tenerife in the Canary Islands on the Airbus A321XLR, which is outside the Caribbean focus of this site but is the headline of the announcement.

What stands out for resort travellers

The pattern is western and prairie Canada. Calgary, Edmonton and Winnipeg gain direct service to major resort gateways, which can remove a connection in Toronto or Montreal on the way to Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, Montego Bay or Punta Cana. The Edmonton to Montego Bay route is listed as daily, which is more frequent than most seasonal sun routes, and it is useful for travellers who need flexibility on arrival and departure days. Anyone planning an all-inclusive trip to Jamaica can read our pages on Montego Bay and Negril, and those considering Punta Cana can compare Bavaro with Arena Gorda.

For Aruba, the Sunday-only schedule from Montreal suits a seven-night stay well, but it restricts you to a single arrival day. Our guide to Aruba versus the Bahamas for an all-inclusive explains how the two islands differ for resort guests. Barbados and Guadeloupe are once-weekly services, which means a missed connection or a delay can cost a full week, so allow a buffer day if you can.

What is not confirmed

Three of the four new destinations carry a government approval note. Until approval is granted, the routes are plans rather than guaranteed flights. The release does not publish fares, aircraft for the sun routes, or flight times for the routes beyond the Tenerife service, and we are not stating any. Seasonal schedules are also typically refined as the winter approaches, so a route that is listed today can see frequencies adjusted.

Booking sensibly

  • Check the day of the week. Several routes run only one or two days weekly. Match your resort check-in day to the flight, and ask whether the resort can accommodate an early arrival or a late departure.
  • Prefer flexible terms on approval-dependent routes. If the flight is cancelled, you want a refund route that does not depend on rebooking at a worse time.
  • Confirm transfers. New routes sometimes land at different times of day from existing ones. Our explanation of how far from the airport your resort should be is worth reading before you pick a resort for a late arrival.

The full list is in Air Canada’s release, and the airline’s booking engine is the place to confirm any date before you pay.
