Occidental Papagayo is adults-only, minimum age 18, published. Riu Palace Costa Rica is a family resort.

Papagayo: 9 miles from Liberia, about 25 minutes by car via Route 21.

Riu Palace Costa Rica: nothing. Neither RIU property in Guanacaste publishes an airport distance at all.

On a province where the resort beaches are spread out, that is a meaningful gap, and it is the second thing Papagayo publishes that nobody else does.

Scale and provision

Riu Palace Costa Rica: six swimming pools, five restaurants, seven bars, plus a named water park.

Occidental Papagayo: two pools, three restaurants, four bars, and “more than 163 rooms” across 23 buildings.

These are not the same size of holiday. Riu is a large family resort with a water park; Papagayo is a small adults-only property on a hillside.

The hillside is published as a limitation

The beach is the only area without ramp access due to the hotel’s hillside location.

Papagayo volunteers this. If mobility matters, it is decisive information, and Riu publishes nothing comparable.

Two things to check at Papagayo

Breakfast on arrival day is not included, and room service runs 10:00 to 20:00. Both are stated on the page, which is more than most operators manage.

Choose Occidental Papagayo if

You want a genuinely adults-only stay with the age confirmed in writing, a short published transfer, and a small quiet property.

Choose Riu Palace Costa Rica if

You are travelling with children, or you want six pools and a counted restaurant offer.

Where the evidence cannot separate them

Neither publishes a mandatory fee schedule. Neither publishes beach sand type. Papagayo publishes no exact room count, and Riu publishes no room count at all.
