Minimum age policies at adults-only resorts

The label is not the policy

“Adults-only” is a marketing category, not a defined standard. In the resorts we document it covers at least three different arrangements, and the difference between them is the difference between the week you booked and a week you did not.

An eighteen-plus property excludes children entirely. A sixteen-plus property does not — and in a school-holiday week, sixteen and seventeen year olds travel with their families in numbers. An adults-only hotel sitting inside a family complex, sharing its restaurants and beaches, is adults-only in the room and not in the estate.

All three are honestly described as adults-only by their operators. Only one of them delivers what most people picture.

What we found

Across the adults-only resorts in our records, the pattern is consistent and unhelpful.

One publishes eighteen and over, applied to the whole property. One publishes sixteen and over. Several publish nothing at all — labelled adults-only, prominently and repeatedly, with no number anywhere on the official page.

In one case, two resorts from the same brand on the same stretch of road both omit it. At that point it stops reading as an oversight at one property and starts reading as a house style.

Why the number carries the whole proposition

Think about why someone chooses adults-only. It is almost never about the building. It is about the absence of small children in the pool, at breakfast, and outside the room at 7am.

That outcome depends entirely on the minimum age. A resort that satisfies the label and admits sixteen-year-olds has sold you the category without the benefit — and you will not discover it until you are there.

It is the only product feature we can think of where the defining specification is routinely left off the page.

The one-line fix

Before you pay, send this:

“Please confirm the exact minimum guest age at this resort, and whether it applies to the entire property or only to certain areas.”

Two clauses, because the second catches the adults-only-within-a-complex arrangement that the first would miss. Keep the reply.

Why we will not fill the gap for you

You will find confident answers on booking sites and travel blogs for exactly the resorts whose operators do not publish a number. Some will be right.

We do not reproduce them, because an age policy sourced from a third party is precisely the kind of fact that changes without anyone updating the blog post — and being wrong about this one does not cost a reader a mild disappointment. It costs them the reason they booked.

Where the operator publishes it, our profiles state it. Where the operator does not, our profiles say so plainly and tell you to ask. That is less satisfying and considerably more useful.
