Maldives resort transfers, explained

Why this is the first question, not the last

Everywhere else we cover, the airport transfer is a number you check after choosing a resort. In the Maldives it determines which resorts are available to you, what your flight times need to be, and whether a short trip is possible at all.

Every resort is on its own island. There are no roads between them. Getting there is a separate journey after your international arrival at Velana International, near Male.

The three routes

Speedboat. For resorts near Male. Typically the shortest and the only one that runs at night, which makes late arrivals workable.

Seaplane. For mid-distance resorts. Scenic, and the image most people have of arriving in the Maldives. The constraint nobody mentions in the brochure: seaplanes fly in daylight only. A late international arrival means an overnight in Male before you reach your resort.

Domestic flight plus speedboat. For distant atolls. A scheduled domestic flight to a regional airport, then a boat.

Which one you get is a property of the resort’s location, not a choice you make.

A documented example

Both Maldives resorts we document — Hotel Riu Palace Maldivas on Kedhigandu and Hotel Riu Atoll on Maafushi, in Dhaalu Atoll — publish the identical route:

a 45-minute domestic flight to Kudahuvadhoo, followed by a 15-minute speedboat ride

That is roughly an hour of onward travel after an international flight, plus connection time at both ends. It is also a route that depends on the domestic flight schedule, which is the real constraint: your international arrival has to land in time to connect to one.

What this means for planning

Short trips do not work. Two legs each way, plus schedule dependency, means a three or four-night Maldives trip spends a disproportionate share of itself in transit. Every resort we document here suits a long stay and none suits a short one.

Your international flight times are not free choices. Ask which onward connection your arrival permits before you book the flight, not after.

Ask who pays. Transfer cost is very commonly separate from the room rate in the Maldives, sometimes substantially so. Neither operator page we read publishes a transfer price, and we do not publish prices. Treat the transfer as a cost you must ask about.

What is not published, and matters

The green tax and the bed tax. Charges commonly applied to Maldives resort stays. Neither operator page we read mentions either, and we have not sourced the amounts to an official government page, so we are not going to state them.

Assume there are charges beyond the rate. Ask what they total before you pay.

Whether the transfer is refundable if your international flight is delayed and you miss the domestic connection. This is exactly the scenario a two-leg transfer creates, and no page we read addresses it.

The short version

Pick the transfer first, the resort second. A resort you love on an atoll you cannot reach in daylight is a resort with a night in Male attached to it.
