What 24-hour all-inclusive actually means

The distinction operators are actually making

A standard all-inclusive rate runs on service windows. Breakfast until ten. Lunch between one and three. The bars close at eleven, or midnight, or whenever the entertainment ends.

A 24-hour all-inclusive removes the windows: food and drink are available at any hour, usually through a smaller set of venues overnight rather than the full complement.

That is the entire published difference, and it is more consequential than it sounds.

When it genuinely matters

Arriving late. A 9pm landing plus a transfer means a standard resort’s kitchens are closing as you check in. On a 24-hour property you eat.

Long-haul arrivals and jet lag. If your body thinks it is breakfast time at 3am, a resort with no overnight service is a resort where you lie awake hungry.

Departing early. The flip side: a 5am departure on a standard rate means you paid for a breakfast you cannot attend.

Children on a different schedule. Small children do not respect a 10am breakfast cutoff, and neither do teenagers.

When it changes nothing

If you are arriving mid-afternoon, eating dinner at eight and sleeping through, you will never notice. Most guests never use the overnight service at all.

It is a risk-reduction feature more than a daily one — worth paying attention to when your itinerary is awkward, and worth ignoring when it is not.

What the phrase still does not tell you

Which venues stay open. Overnight service is not the whole resort. It is usually one bar and a snack counter, and operators rarely publish which.

Whether the drinks are the same. Premium spirits that are included at 6pm may not be the ones available at 4am, and this is essentially never published.

Whether room service is included. Separate question entirely. One property in our coverage publishes room service as part of the rate; most do not mention it at all.

Whether anything else is included. 24-hour describes the hours, not the scope. A 24-hour all-inclusive can still charge for the spa, the a la carte restaurants, the motorised water sports and the safe.

How common is it?

Common in some chains and absent in others. Across the resorts we document, RIU publishes 24-hour all-inclusive on essentially every property, while several other operators publish nothing about service hours at all.

That last group is the problem. An operator that does not publish its service hours has not told you they are restricted — it has told you nothing, and the absence should not be read as either answer.

What to do with this

If your arrival or departure is awkward, treat published 24-hour service as a genuine tiebreaker.

If an operator publishes nothing about service hours, ask what time the last food service is on the day you land. It is a short question with a specific answer, and it is the sort of thing that decides whether your first evening is a meal or a packet of crisps.
