What resort room category names actually mean

Five names, five different things

Operators use these interchangeably in marketing and precisely in room tables. The room table is the one to trust.

Swim-up / swim-out. Your terrace opens directly onto a shared pool. You step in from your room. Other guests are in the same water.

Pool access. Usually the same as swim-up, occasionally weaker — a gate onto a pool terrace rather than into the water. Worth confirming.

Poolside. Near a pool. Not in it. This is the one most often mistaken for the others, and it is by far the most common.

Private pool / plunge pool. Your own water, nobody else in it. Usually small. Sometimes a rooftop.

Jacuzzi terrace. A hot tub on the balcony. Not a pool, and not for swimming in.

The gap between “poolside” and “swim-up” is the gap between walking thirty seconds and walking none, and it is frequently the gap between two price tiers.

What the published counts reveal

Where operators publish room tables by category, the scarcity becomes visible:

• TRS Coral — 94 swim-out rooms of 473. Roughly one in five.
• Grand Palladium Jamaica — 48 private-pool rooms of 537. Fewer than one in ten.
• Grand Palladium Select Bavaro — 38 private-pool or swim-up rooms of 506.
• Grand Palladium Select Costa Mujeres — 265 poolside or pool-access rooms of 493. More than half.

That last one is the instructive figure. At a resort where more than half the rooms are poolside, “poolside” is not an upgrade, it is the default — and paying extra for it would be paying for the standard product.

The questions that decide whether it is worth it

Is the pool shared, and how big is it? A swim-up room on a large quiet pool is a different thing from one on a small busy one.

Is it overlooked? Ground-floor terraces on a walkway are still ground-floor terraces on a walkway.

Is it heated? Rarely published, and a cool plunge pool in January is decoration.

What proportion of the resort has one? If it is more than half, it is the norm.

Does the category carry a tier with it? At Barcelo the swim-up categories are Premium Level, so the room comes bundled with an upgrade programme you may or may not want.
