The criterion, stated first
A resort qualifies if its operator publishes at least one overwater room or villa category by name. Both entries are in Dhaalu Atoll and both are RIU, which is the limit of what we can document rather than the limit of what exists.

Hotel Riu Palace Maldivas
An overwater-suite resort on a private island in Dhaalu Atoll, publishing 176 rooms, a two-leg transfer of a 45-minute domestic flight plus a 15-minute speedboat, and an unusually specific inclusions list that covers room service, laundry, spa access and premium spirits.
The catch: Markets itself for couples while publishing a children’s programme, so the environment is genuinely ambiguous

Hotel Riu Atoll
The larger and more family-oriented of two RIU islands in Dhaalu Atoll, at 264 rooms, connected to its Palace neighbour by a walkway. Three restaurants, two pools, overwater junior suites and a dive centre with an included pool tryout.

Why this list is short
Overwater accommodation is rare, expensive to build, and concentrated in a handful of destinations. Across thirty-four documented resorts in five countries, exactly two publish an overwater room category.
Both are in Dhaalu Atoll, on neighbouring islands, under one operator. That is a fact about what we can source, not a claim about the world.
Riu Palace Maldivas — the higher grade
Why it is here: Two overwater categories — a Suite overwater, and a Suite with private pool, overwater. The private-pool category is the most specific overwater product we can document anywhere.
176 rooms, and the most detailed inclusions list in our coverage, with laundry and spa access named as included.
The catch: Marketed as especially for couples while publishing a children’s programme, so it is not the adults-only overwater retreat the category implies. No minimum age published.
Who it suits: Couples on a long stay who want the private-pool category specifically.
Riu Atoll — overwater without the top tier
Why it is here: Junior Suite overwater and Superior Junior Suite overwater — an overwater room at a lower grade than the Palace island next door. It also publishes a standard double, so the property is not overwater-only.
264 rooms, a named dive centre, two pools.
The catch: Three restaurants for 264 rooms on an island you cannot leave. The walkway to the Palace island is published, but the restaurant access across it is published only in the other direction.
Who it suits: Anyone who wants the overwater experience without committing to the highest grade, and families, since this island is unambiguously family.
What to check before booking either
Neither publishes a minimum age. Neither mentions the Maldives green tax or bed tax. Both require a 45-minute domestic flight plus a 15-minute speedboat, so neither works as a short trip.

Anyone booking in the Caribbean or Mexico. No resort we document in any of those destinations publishes an overwater room category, and the overwater bungalow in our own site artwork is illustration rather than a property we cover.
