Jamaica’s resort areas are spread across the island, and the main difference between them is not the beach or the brand. It is the drive from Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay. Pick the wrong base for the length of your trip and the transfer eats a meaningful share of your holiday. This guide sets out what the resorts publish about Montego Bay, Negril and Ocho Rios, drawing on our own destination pages for Montego Bay, Negril and Ocho Rios, each last verified on 13 September 2026.
The distances, side by side
- Montego Bay corridor: 2.7 km from the airport, about ten to fifteen minutes. This is the shortest published transfer in our coverage across three countries.
- Ocho Rios: 90 km, about ninety minutes, on the north coast at Mammee Bay.
- Negril: approximately 80 km from the airport. The operator we can document does not publish a drive time, and we have not estimated one, because eighty kilometres on coastal Jamaican roads is not the same as eighty kilometres on a motorway.
Do the arithmetic first
A ninety-minute transfer means three hours of driving round trip. On a ten-night stay that is a morning. On a four-night stay it is roughly a quarter of your usable daylight, and it comes out of arrival and departure day, which are already the shortest. Our guide to how far from the airport your resort should be walks through the same sum. The rule of thumb is simple: the shorter the trip, the more the airport corridor wins.
Montego Bay: proximity wins
The Mahoe Bay and Rose Hall corridor sits immediately east of the airport. A fifteen-minute transfer means a morning arrival becomes a usable afternoon. The cost of that convenience is a developed, convenient stretch rather than a secluded one. If the point of your trip is to feel far from everything, this is not that.
There is also a constraint worth knowing early. Both resorts we profile on this corridor are adults-only, so families will not find a documented family option here. Neither publishes a minimum age. If the absence of children is why you are choosing an adults-only resort, ask for the age rule in writing before paying. Between the two, the location and transfer are the same; the difference is fit-out, with three infinity pools and swim-up loungers at the higher-tier property against five pools and one swim-up bar at the other.
Ocho Rios: setting for a price
Ocho Rios asks for ninety minutes each way and gives you a north-coast setting in return. For families it is also where the documented family resort sits, so for a family trip the drive is currently the cost of the only family option we can describe, rather than a choice between locations.
That resort publishes six pools, including two with swim-up bars and dedicated children’s pools, plus RIU Land and an indoor playground. Indoor space is rarely published and is valuable in a region where heavy rain can arrive suddenly and pass quickly. The kids club is named, but its age band is not stated on the Ocho Rios page, so ask if your children are near either edge. Round-the-clock dining helps after a long transfer with tired children; our explainer on what 24-hour all-inclusive actually means shows what to confirm.
Negril: Seven Mile Beach and a longer road
Negril lies on the west coast along Norman Manley Boulevard and Seven Mile Beach. Roughly comparable to Ocho Rios in distance but in the opposite direction, it is the choice for people who want the beach strip and are prepared to drive for it. Whether that is sensible depends on trip length. On a fortnight it fades into the background; on four nights it is a large fraction of the stay.
Our coverage here is thin: one property, Hotel Riu Negril, which publishes a two-bedroom family room with a sea view and a swim-up suite, and names seven dining venues. It publishes no room count, pool count or bar count. One resort is not a survey of a coast, and we say so. If you are weighing it against the north coast, our comparison of Riu Negril and Riu Ocho Rios covers the property-level detail.
Which base for which trip
- Three to five nights: Montego Bay, for the minutes saved.
- A week or more, with children: Ocho Rios, accepting the drive.
- A week or more, beach-focused: Negril, if you can confirm the transfer time with the resort.
- Couples wanting adults-only: the Montego Bay corridor, after confirming the age policy.
Timing and recovery
Jamaica’s weather and hurricane season affect when each area is at its best, so read our guide to the best time to visit Jamaica before fixing dates. Many Jamaican resorts have also been reopening in phases after Hurricane Melissa, so confirm that the facilities you want are open for your dates; our report on Jamaica’s hotel reopenings gives the background.
